When does EXCEL begin?
EXCEL begins the very first day of school. At 4:00PM, after the bell has rung, students should go to their lockers to get their backpacks and books, and then they should report to the band hall, which is in the Fine Arts Building. We will have an orientation for the new students after we serve a snack. After the first day, students should continue to report to the band hall no later than 4:05PM to sign in.
Where are the EXCEL students picked up? On the first day of school and everyday thereafter, you may pick up your child in the band hall. There is a side door to the band hall on the north side of the building, which you may use for parking and pickup. Please remember you MUST come inside to sign out your student before he or she may leave Excel.
What is the schedule for an afternoon in EXCEL? Excel begins when school is dismissed and lasts until 6:00PM. A typical afternoon in the EXCEL program includes:
Attendance: 4:00-4:05PM-- Students are expected to arrive at the program site (Band Hall) after the dismissal bell by 4:05 to sign in for the day. Unless absent from school, the program requires prior notification (phone call, note) if a student is not to attend EXCEL on any given day. You may call and leave a message on the Excel cell phone on the day your child will be absent, or you may bring a note to EXCEL before he leaves school. We will not allow students to call you from EXCEL to ask you if they can go home with a friend. We respect your time at work and do not want to disturb you unless there is an emergency.
Snack/Gathering: 4:05-4:15PM—During this time, the students will be served a nutritious snack in the band hall. This time also allows students to socialize and relax.
Quiet Time: 4:15-5:30PM – Students use this time for homework. Help from Junior School teachers is available, as well as tips for test-taking, study skills and organizational skills. Also, we have available laptop computers for student use. It is helpful if students have their own flash drives.
EXCEL students often are able to connect with their regular classroom teachers in order to clarify homework assignments or receive assistance with class work. If a student does not have homework, s/he is expected to read a book. The importance of developing good study habits is emphasized in EXCEL.
Pick up time is no later than 6:00PM sharp. A late fee of $2 per minute will be assessed after 6:05. If you have an emergency, please make arrangements for someone to pick up your child. It is helpful to have a reliable person that your child can call in an emergency. Also, please be sure that we have your work and cell phone numbers and that your child also knows them.
How much will I owe each month? You will receive a payment sheet with the amount owed for each month. Your monthly payment will vary according to the number of school days in the month. Tuition is $12 per day times the total number of school days. For example, 18 school days times $12 per day equals $216 for that month.
When are payments due? Payments are due during the first week of every month. A late fee of $20 will be charged for payments made after the due date. Checks should be made out to AHISD and the child’s name should be written somewhere on the check along with your phone number and Texas driver's license number.
How will discipline problems be handled? When a problem occurs during EXCEL, one of the teachers will confer with the parent who picks up the student. Students will be expected to follow all school rules during EXCEL. In extreme cases a discipline referral may need to be made. We want EXCEL to be a safe and pleasant experience for all students. It is imperative that we know where your child is at all times. They are not allowed to “disappear” without telling us where they are going. We also expect that students will observe the quiet time set aside for study in the band hall so that all may benefit from this time to get homework finished before going home.
